Benefits Cheat Sheet
Compiled By: Emi Ferry, emi@rpgbenefits.com
- You have 31 days to enroll new hires or make benefits changes after a qualifying event (ie. Marriage, divorce, birth, etc.). It's important to remind employees that have had a qualifying event that they have the option of updating their Life Insurance Beneficiary Information. Please remember that most Life Insurance Carriers do not keep track of Beneficiary Information. In the instance of a claim, they will come to you in order to find out who the beneficiary is.
- If you are faxing applications directly in to the carriers, please make sure that your Group Number is listed both on the Cover Sheet and on the actual application. You may be eligible for online billing and enrollment with some or all of the carriers you're currently using. Please contact us for more information.
- Pre-existing conditions won't come into play if the covered employee or dependent have had continuous coverage for 12 months without a lapse in coverage of more than 63 days. It's important that employees fill out their past 12 months' worth of coverage on their Medical applications in order to insure that a pre-existing condition limitation is not imposed by the carrier.
- COBRA is for employers who normally employ 20 or more employees on at least 50 percent of its working days during the prior calendar year (part-time employees are counted in this calculation). With COBRA, you can continue your medical, dental and vision benefits.
- NC State Continuation is for employers who do not qualify for COBRA. With NC State Continuation, you may continue your medical benefits (dental and vision are not included).
- You should have employees fill out a HIPAA Authorization form if they are discussing claims related issues with you. To avoid HIPAA liability exposure, employees should always deal with claims issues directly with the Insurance company first and then come to you only if the issue needs to be escalated.
- Be sure and reconcile your bills to your employee census each month to make sure insurance carriers have the correct coverage and premium for each employee.
